Nourishing Snacks — The Anti-Diet Edition

Nourishing Snacks — The Anti-Diet Edition

When you’re healing your relationship with food, figuring out how to snack can feel surprisingly complicated. Diet culture has told us snacks should be tiny, “clean,” or only allowed if we’ve “earned” them. Enter the anti-diet, weight inclusive, and eating disorder aligned version of snacks and they are something else entirely. They are nourishment. They are fun. They are joyful and satisfying. They buy you time until your next meal. And they are an essential way to meet your nutrition needs throughout the day.

Building a Complete Snack (If That’s Helpful for You)

Not everyone needs structure around snacks, but if you’re in recovery or relearning how to nourish yourself, a gentle guide can help. One way to build a satisfying snack is by combining:

  • A starch/carbohydrate (for energy)
  • A protein or fat (for fullness and blood sugar stability)
  • A fruit or vegetable (for fiber, color, and variety)

This is not a rule, it’s just a flexible tool. It’s totally okay to eat snacks that don’t check every box.

Simple Snack Ideas

There’s no “perfect” snack. The best snack is one that meets your needs in the moment, whether that’s something comforting, convenient, crunchy, warm, nostalgic, or quick.

Thinking Outside the (Snack) Box

Not all snacks need to be typical snack foods (like the list above). Sometimes it’s easier to think of snacks as mini-meals.  That could look like:

  • A slice of leftover pizza
  • Half a sandwich (or a whole sandwich!)
  • Bowl of pasta or rice and beans
  • Last night’s stir-fry
  • A quesadilla or wrap

Leaving Diet Culture Out of Snacks

You are allowed to eat just because you’re hungry. Or because you’re tired. Or because it’s been a few hours and your body needs energy. You don’t have to justify a snack with exercise, productivity, or eating “less” later.

Snacks help prevent crashes in energy, mood, and blood sugar. They can improve focus, decrease rebound eating, and support recovery. Most importantly, they are part of giving your body consistent and adequate nourishment.

All bodies deserve care, food, and satisfaction. Snacks are one way we can practice that care. Whether you’re packing cheese sticks and crackers or microwaving leftover lasagna, you’re honoring your hunger and your healing. And that matters. If you need support with this we are always here to support you!
